Job Available: Treasurer

The Board of Trustees of the Lowville Free Library seeks a contracted treasurer who will report to the Board of Trustees. The work may vary monthly but is expected to average 6-8 hours per month with an annual stipend of $2,400.  

The Treasurer should be aware of all written Board-approved fiscal policies and the basic financial procedures used by the library. The Treasurer is expected to understand the library’s funding sources. The Board is looking for a Treasurer who will be committed to the library’s work, foster a positive working relationship with members of the Board of Trustees, the Director, and other library employees, and follow through on communication and recommendations in a timely manner. The Treasurer should be aware of and abstain from any conflicts of interest.  


  • Create reports summarizing the system’s revenues, expenditures and balances. Reports should be reviewed by the Board Financial Officer prior to the monthly board meeting. 
  • Attend regularly scheduled monthly meetings and special meetings of the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees, and present reports at those meetings as requested.  
  • Meet with the Director to pick up bills and pay them in a timely manner. 
  • Review and reconcile all system accounts, including checking and investment accounts.  
  • Review system’s cash flow statements monthly.  
  • Review annual audit.  
  • Review annual budget prepared by the Finance Committee.  
  • When necessary, sign checks and bank account transfers.  
  • Monitor the accuracy of payroll on a biweekly basis.  
  • Gather documents for annual taxes and work with the tax preparer to file 990.  


  • Professional training and experience in accounting/bookkeeping for 2+ years 
  • A thorough understanding of record keeping, accounting systems and financial reports 
  • Ability to respond to questions and “translate” financial information for the trustees 
  • Proficient in the use of QuickBooks or other accounting software and Microsoft Office
